The Truth about Screen Protectors [VIDEO]

So you guys have battery problems? Cool.

I never did, until….I installed a screen protector!!

I realized after a few days that my battery life was drastically shorter. I also realized that I had inadvertently covered one of the sensors on the front of the screen by the speaker with it, because the whole was not lined up perfectly.

My guess is that it is possibly misreading the amount of light entering the screen and my “auto” brightness is pulling a lot of battery.

I took the screen protector off, put on a fresh one – lined up properly – and POOF! Battery life was doing great again. – Android Forums, January 2012

It is essential to get the right screen protector for your phone!  The screen protector should be made for your device and line up with the screen when installed.  We’ve seen devices get all jacked up for not having the proper screen protector.  If it’s too large, or not aligned properly — The device’s proximity meter gets screwed up, because it is covered by the screen protector… and the phone will appear to go dead.

Jon joins me to show you how a screen protector can cause issues.

The Truth About Liquid Damage [VIDEO]

Summer is coming… and after 8 months in a row of above average temperatures… it’s gonna be here before you know it!  That means, more time around water… and more possibilities to liquid damage your phone.

image from wikiHow

I talked with Jackie from IVC Wireless Solution Center in Marseilles about liquid damage, the importance of insurance, and how even moisture from the shower can liquid damage your phone.  What that means is… Liquid damage to your phone will void any warranty honored by the manufacturer.

The director of our retail stores told me a story about a customer who just bought a HTC Hero when it first came out, and as soon as they walked out the door, the phone slipped out of their hand and fell into a puddle.  Luckily, they had insurance, and they were able to replace the phone at a minimal cost.

See your IVC wireless solution center or agent location about adding insurance to your phone!

No insurance?  You may be able to save your phone with  a “Save-A-Phone” kit only $19.95 at Wireless Solution Centers:

Call it a virtual lifesaver, because Save-A-Phone comes to the rescue when an unexpected dunking happens. Just place your phone (or MP3 player, camera, gaming device or remote) in the resealable, airtight bag along with the Drying Agent Packs and the moisture will be drawn out. It works wonders when sensitive electronics have been in a high-humidity environment or have been completely submerged in freshwater. A moisture indicator lets you know when the process is complete. Made from Mylar foil and clear polyethylene with low Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate.  Includes two Drying Agent Packs. Process takes from four to 72 hours.

Android Task Killers: Yes or No?

.

The Android Task Killer is almost Taboo. Some say use one others say stay away. What’s the real answer? I can’t honestly say there’s a real answer. It is up to you ultimately. The R&D Department here at Illinois Valley Cellular has done research on Task killers and what they do. Android uses RAM differently than a computer. On Android, having your RAM nearly full is a good thing. It means that when you relaunch an app you’ve previously opened, the app launches quickly and returns to its previous state. So while Android actually uses RAM efficiently, most users see that their RAM is full and assume that’s what’s slowing down their phone.  Task Killing Apps present you with a list of “running” apps and the option to kill as many as you want. So essentially it kills the RAM which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But as an Android user I understand that you don’t always want your apps running. App killers are useful on Android phones that are running the 2.1 and 2.2 software, which would include the Hero, Desire, Wildfire, as well as the axis.  So really the answer is up to you. Below is the article where I found this information however in this article we recommend that you DO NOT ROOT your phone. It voids the warranty and we will not work on it in that case. Also included are a few different Task Killers that we use the most.
